His explosiveness did drop since the 2007 season, due to several injuries, including several knee operations. But he entered New York with a different state of mind. He played with great leadership and created his own shots. His first half-season in a Knick uniform was highly successful, Stoudemire was even mentioned being a possible MVP candidate. It seemed as if his game would evolve into a status higher than just your ordinary superstar.
Keep in mind, this was all happening alongside a rejuvenated Raymond Felton. The ball movement with Felton was as if Stoudemire hadn't left Phoenix, only this time he was leading the charge. Felton was also so happy to be in New York, and played his best basketball there compared to his entire career.
I didn't see anything special between this duo before because it appeared that Amar'e was coexist well with any point guard as he could make plays on his own. That mindset of mine has changed since the Knicks gave away Raymond Felton in the large package needed to acquire Carmelo Anthony.
Stoudemire had been deflated ever since. He reminded me of how Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing and friends lost their talent in Space Jam. It was immediate. He had lost his groove ever since. He needed a point guard to revitalize the fluid game he's had. Amar'e needed someone to execute the pick-and-roll often in games.
Since the end of the Knicks' 2012 lockout season, I've joked to my friends that Felton will come back cause that's the only other point guard he has played well with. Little did I know what was going on inside the Knicks front office during the off-season, and coincidentally here he is, back in New York.
I can't see how Stoudemire can fail now with three great point guards. He is teammates with a legendary guard in Jason Kidd, who possibly has the greatest court vision in the game. Also legendary player from overseas, Pablo Prigioni, known for his role helping Argentina capture the gold in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Last but not least, he's got his former teammate Raymond Felton, who can remind him the great times as a Knick from a couple of years back.
This year New York really has all the pieces needed to dive deeper into the playoffs. Hard to imagine how Miami can be stopped with the momentum they've carried last year, but this New York Knicks squad don't have to hope playing well with great teams as they are loaded with talent and experience, which are factors needed to to help teams improve dramatically.
